Every five to 10 years, the International Organization for Standardization reviews the standards in order to keep them up to date. The 2008 revision of the standard is still valid until September 2018. Before that date, all previously certified companies will have to make the transition to the new 2015 revision in order to maintain their registrations.

While you can still certify against ISO 9001:2008 during the transition period, it is expected that in September 2016, leading certification bodies will stop certifying against the old version of the standard.   • Documented information

The changes introduce risk-based thinking, and are fundamentally different from the previous version. These processes are now considered to be a vital part of business operations, rather than being added on to normal business practices.
